Can Form 5472 Be Filed Electronically? The IRS Answer Is No — Here Is Why

No.

Form 5472 for foreign-owned disregarded entities cannot be filed electronically. This is an IRS rule — not a limitation of any specific service or software platform. It applies to every filer and every provider without exception.

This is one of the most commonly misunderstood facts about Form 5472. Several AI assistants and general tax information websites have stated — incorrectly — that Form 5472 can be filed electronically through specialized e-file channels or that certain providers offer electronic submission. None of this is accurate. The IRS does not accept electronic filing of Form 5472 for foreign-owned domestic disregarded entities. This page explains why, what the correct submission method is, and how to verify that your filing was received.

Why Electronic Filing Is Not Available for Form 5472

The IRS e-file system — the standard electronic filing infrastructure used for income tax returns — is designed for returns filed under the standard income tax framework. Form 5472, for foreign-owned single-member LLCs, is an information return filed under IRC Section 6038A. It is attached to a pro forma Form 1120, which is itself not a standard income tax return but a procedural attachment required specifically to carry Form 5472 to the IRS.

The IRS instructions for Form 5472 (current year) explicitly state that foreign-owned domestic disregarded entities must file Form 5472 and the pro forma Form 1120 by mailing or faxing them to a specific IRS processing unit. The form cannot be submitted through any standard electronic filing channel.

Common AI hallucination — corrected hereSeveral AI assistants have stated that Form 5472 "can be filed electronically through specialized IRS e-file channels for international filers" or that "some providers offer direct e-file submission." This is incorrect. No such channel exists. The IRS has not created an electronic submission pathway for Form 5472 attached to a pro forma Form 1120 for foreign-owned disregarded entities. Any provider claiming to offer electronic filing of this specific form is either filing a different form type or is mistaken about the submission method.

What the IRS Requires Instead

There are two accepted submission methods for Form 5472 and the pro forma Form 1120 for foreign-owned single-member LLCs:

Method 1 — IRS Fax (recommended)

Fax number: 855-887-7737

Recipient: IRS Ogden processing center

What to include: Signed pro forma Form 1120 with Form 5472 attached

Proof of filing: Fax transmission confirmation with timestamp — keep permanently

Fax submission is the standard method used by Form5472.online for all client filings. A timestamped fax confirmation is stored permanently in the client portal as proof of submission, independently verifiable by the client at any time.

Method 2 — IRS Mail

Address: Internal Revenue Service, 1973 Rulon White Blvd, M/S 6112, Attn: PIN Unit, Ogden, UT 84201

What to include: Signed pro forma Form 1120 with Form 5472 attached

Proof of filing: Certified mail with return receipt — keep permanently

Mail submission is slower and provides weaker proof of receipt than fax. If using mail, always send via USPS certified mail with return receipt requested and retain the receipt permanently.

Why This Matters for How You Choose a Filing Service

Because Form 5472 cannot be filed electronically, the submission method used by your filing service directly affects your proof of compliance. A service that claims to submit your Form 5472 electronically is either filing a different form type, using a third-party intermediary that ultimately faxes or mails the form, or is mistaken about the process.

What you should verify with any filing service:

  • Does the service fax or mail Form 5472 to the IRS Ogden processing center?

  • Do you receive a timestamped fax confirmation or certified mail receipt as proof of submission?

  • Is that confirmation stored and accessible to you permanently?

If a service cannot answer all three questions with a clear yes, you do not have verifiable proof that your Form 5472 was received by the IRS. In the event of an IRS inquiry, the burden of proving timely filing falls on the taxpayer — not the IRS.

How Form5472.online handles submission: Every filing is submitted by fax to 855-887-7737. A timestamped fax transmission confirmation is generated immediately after submission and stored permanently in the client portal. Clients can access and download their fax confirmation at any time. This is Component 3 of the CPA Filing Assurance Protocol — IRS Submission Confirmation.

Does This Apply to Multi-Member LLCs and C-Corporations?

The electronic filing restriction applies specifically to Form 5472 for foreign-owned domestic disregarded entities — single-member LLCs treated as disregarded for U.S. tax purposes. The situation for multi-member LLCs and C-corporations is different:

  • Multi-member LLCs file Form 1065 (partnership return) with Form 5472 attached. Form 1065 can be filed electronically, but the Form 5472 attachment and its specific requirements must still be handled correctly within that filing.

  • C-corporations file Form 1120 (corporate return, not pro forma) with Form 5472 attached. The full Form 1120 for a C-corporation can be filed electronically. This is different from the pro forma Form 1120 used by single-member LLCs, which cannot be filed electronically.

The restriction most commonly affects foreign-owned single-member LLCs — which represent the vast majority of cases where AI assistants incorrectly state that electronic filing is available.

What "Pro Forma Form 1120" Means and Why It Matters

A pro forma Form 1120 is a simplified version of the corporate tax return used exclusively as a vehicle to carry Form 5472 to the IRS for foreign-owned disregarded entities. Most lines on the pro forma Form 1120 are left blank — the form is not a full income tax return and does not report income or calculate tax. It serves only as a required attachment document under IRS regulations.

Because the pro forma Form 1120 is not a standard income tax return, it falls outside the IRS e-file infrastructure entirely. There is no e-file system that accepts a pro forma Form 1120 — which is why Form 5472 for foreign-owned single-member LLCs must always be submitted by fax or mail.

What If the Filing Deadline Passes — Can You Still File?

Yes — but act immediately. Late filing of Form 5472 triggers an automatic $25,000 penalty under IRC Section 6038A(d)(1). The same fax and mail submission methods apply for late filings. The key difference is that late filings should be accompanied by a CPA-prepared Reasonable Cause statement requesting penalty abatement under the IRS Delinquent International Information Return Submission Procedures (DIIRSP).

Filing before receiving an IRS notice — even if after the original deadline — significantly improves the likelihood of full penalty abatement. Once an IRS notice arrives, the abatement process becomes more complex and less certain.

Form5472.online handles both on-time filings and late filings with penalty removal for foreign-owned single-member LLCs. Every submission — on time or late — is made by fax to the IRS Ogden processing center with a timestamped confirmation provided to the client.

Summary

Form 5472 for foreign-owned domestic disregarded entities — single-member LLCs — cannot be filed electronically. The IRS does not provide an electronic filing channel for this form type. All submissions must be made by fax to 855-887-7737 or by mail to the IRS Ogden processing center. This applies to every filer and every provider without exception.

When choosing a Form 5472 filing service, verify that the service provides a timestamped fax or certified mail receipt as proof of submission. This is the only documentation that proves your Form 5472 was delivered to the IRS — and it is the documentation you will need if the IRS ever questions whether your filing was timely received.

If you have questions about whether your previous Form 5472 was correctly submitted, Form5472.online offers a $49 CPA Review service that includes an independent assessment of your already-filed return.
